What type of ice is best for concrete cooling?

Flake ice and block ice are the two most widely used types for concrete cooling. Flake ice mixes directly into the concrete batch for rapid, uniform temperature reduction. Block ice is crushed on-site and added to the mixing water or aggregate, providing longer-lasting cooling for large pours in extreme heat.

How does ice cooling improve concrete quality?

Adding ice to concrete lowers the mixing temperature, which controls the hydration heat during curing. This prevents thermal cracking, improves structural strength and extends working time in hot weather — critical for dams, tunnels and large foundations.

What capacity ice machine do I need for a construction project?

Capacity depends on daily concrete volume, ambient temperature and target mixing temperature. Koller offers block ice machines from 1 ton to 200+ tons per day and flake ice machines from 0.5 to 100+ tons per day. Share your project details and our engineers will size the right system.

Can ice machines be installed at remote construction sites?

Yes. Koller provides containerized ice making systems that can be transported and installed at remote sites including tunnels, mines and dam projects. These units are self-contained with integrated cooling, water supply and electrical systems.

What is the difference between block ice and flake ice for construction?

Block ice produces large, dense blocks that melt slowly and are ideal for pre-cooling aggregate or mixing water before concrete batching. Flake ice is thin and flat, mixing directly into concrete for faster and more uniform cooling. Block ice suits large-scale projects; flake ice suits precision temperature control.

How does mine cooling with ice blocks work?

Large ice blocks are transported underground and placed in ventilation shafts or cooling chambers. As the blocks melt slowly, they absorb heat from the airflow, lowering the ambient temperature in deep mine tunnels. Koller block ice machines from 5 to 200 tons per day support mine cooling projects worldwide.

What temperature does a blast freezer for construction materials reach?

Koller blast freezers reach freezing temperatures of -60°C to -25°C, with fast cooling speed and an adjustable temperature system. Walk-in freezers hold -25°C to -12°C and walk-in coolers hold -12°C to +5°C.

What warranty do Koller machines carry?

All machines carry a 1-year warranty covering free repairment and components. Beyond the warranty period, the same service is still provided at cost.
